WEEK 2

What skillset must I have to be a creative designer?

To be a creative designer is to be able to think out of the box, to see things from a newer perspective that most people wouldn't expect to think it is possible.

To think out of the box, one of the key skillset I must have is the skill to be able to observe & understand both the character of practice & design. As a creative designer, we have to be able to radically change the way we think, the way we perceive the world.

Not just the way we see the world but also to be able to change the world for the better that ultimately change the way people thinks.

Another key skillset I must have is speculative thinking as it is about thinking and giving form to various possibility, outcome that may change the world for a better turn. To see a possible problem from neither a constrained nor unconstrained point of view and to be able to think critically as to identify & solve the problem.

feather 2.png

How can I achieve that in NAFA?

I can achieve that in NAFA through learning & applying the skillset in my schoolwork. Training myself to be able to see in such a way, to be able to think in such a way for the future.

While in order to be able to think critically, I have to be able to analyses, verify sources, identify argument while also able to create my own argument.

What else do I think I can achieve in NAFA?

I think I can achieve much more in NAFA that I anticipated, such as being able to effectively learn & cooperate with my fellow classmate while being able to be expose to various different views and ideas from perspective I previously had not be able to see from.

I also hope to be able to improve my understanding of design through the use of design thinking & design insight as well as being able to find who I truly am as a designer, as a learner.

STEEP Analysis (Group)

What is the question that my Group Steep research is doing? (Technology)

How does technology in Urbanism balances with nature, or how it make a changes to society?

What is the technology in urbanism?

It is to create smart cities that make use of new technology in an effort to "make urban life easier". A way to make connection in a data-driven environment that make workforce efficient while creating urban economies & social cultural creativity

sand texture inverse.png
feather 2.png

What are the core technology that would be assimilated in a smart cities?

1. Information & communication technology (ICT)

ICT plays an important role in building a bridge between citizens and the government. It allows the city residents to interact with the government, which, in turn, helps the government provide relevant services to its citizens.

2. Internet of things (IOT)

IoT forms a network across the smart city that connects all dots for gathering data and driving actions remotely. All intelligent solutions in smart cities are based on IoT.

3. Sensor

Sensors are key components of any smart control system. They are hidden but are present in large numbers. Sensors help convert physical parameters into a digital form for interpretation and action by humans or automated systems.

4. Artificial Intelligence

With smart systems, there comes a huge amount of data generation. The large amount of data generated by these systems needs to be processed and utilized. This is done by AI –at pace. It helps derive insights from swathes of generated data and also allows machine-to-machine interactions.

5. Blockchain

Even though blockchain is comparatively new for smart cities, it can help give a boost to security and transparency in city services. It can also be employed to generate smart contracts for greater responsiveness and transparency.

Why urban technology?

Due to the rate at which technology advances urbanization, it can lead a spike in pollution & economical imbalances.

Urban technology seek to address these problems as well as creating sustainability.

What are the changes that can have potential impact?

Projects such as energy efficient planning to track & maintain sustainable consumption, Accommodate flora & fauna in smart city and lastly digital planning to mitigate future threats are the potential changes.

What are the trends in Urban technology?

1. GREEN PLANNING OF PUBLIC SPACES

2. SMART HEALTH COMMUNITIES

3. SMART HEALTH COMMUNITIES

4. INCLUSIVE SERVICES AND PLANNING

5. MASS PARTICIPATION

6. CITY OPERATIONS THROUGH AI

7. SURVEILLANCE AND PREDICTIVE POLICING THROUGH AI

8. CYBERSECURITY AND PRIVACY AWARENESS

9. 15-MINUTE CITY

10. MOBILITY: INTELLIGENT, SUSTAINABLE AND AS-A-SERVICE

11. DIGITAL INNOVATION ECOSYSTEM

12. CIRCULAR ECONOMY AND PRODUCING LOCALLY

How can we monitor and stay aware of the impact technological trends has on both developing and developed cities?

  • successful implementation and the power of community engagement can ensure trends and their repercussions can be mitigated.

  • Establish partnerships between public and private stakeholders, namely government agencies, technology companies, health care and life sciences players, the media, NPOs/NGOs, social care entities and citizens.

Reflection (Group STEEP)

What I learn about technology in urbanism in this group steep?

I learn that technology in urbanism is more than just making life easier in urban area but rather creating connection between various aspect in the form of "data" & increasing the efficiency of how various services work.

Efficient communication & sustainability are what technology in urbanism is trying to achieve while solving various problems in relation to creating what is called a "smart city". I learn that Singapore is actually working more and more towards a "smart city" as there were signs that some of the technology that were to contribute into making cities in smart cities are being use in Singapore.

Steep Analysis (Personal)

What is the topic of research for my steep?

My topic of research will be "Artificial intelligence" as this is something that is rising and will becoming something that will eventually be implemented into our daily lives. To research what & how AI will change urban life tomorrow.

AI analysis.jpg

Based on the Steep what is happening in terms of AI?

AI is slowly taking over operation in urban area such as all the basic services & the management of this said operations. The city tomorrow will be smart city where everything or most thing will be automated.

What does this means in terms of moving forward?

This means that a lot of jobs today won't be future-proof as they will be replaced by AI/ Automation. How are people going to stay employ in the world tomorrow & find a place in the workforce with AI take over.

What kind of direction I am going with in my research?

I am going with the "Implementation of AI" as base on the steep question. How and what is the transformation of AI be? How will it be slowly implemented into society?

How will society respond to this change of implementation?

A guess is that situation will be a little hard for the start as people may start getting fired from their job as they are being replace by a robot instead for a cheaper price & more efficient option.

Some people will also find the interaction a bit alien with robot for a start as they are more use to a human-to-human interaction instead.

In what way would I think AI will effect the politics of a country?

I think that with more & more AI in the operation of basic service. People will be unhappy at the start as they have their job taken & unemployment in a country will start to rise. The government will have to take action as a means to keep unemployment at a lower pace.

Introducing AI into the workforce will also affect foreign workers as well as it proms other country to integrate AI into their workforce as well. Things if not under control will scale up to a global scale as unemployment globally will increase.

What is a human's role in a world dominated by AI?

If AI will do most of the hard work, I believe any role or job that is focus on the "human-centered" aspect will remain open for employment as AI or robot can never understand human or have the "heart-to-heart" element of interaction or addition to the role the AI take.

How would I think AI would benefit environment?

I believe AI will help in not just monitoring but also in maintaining & cleaning the environment to make it more eco friendly & perhaps assist in shaping the environment as well.

Reflection (Personal STEEP)

From my question what can I speculate about AI in the implementation & its effect?

I speculate that this change will be graduate & the general public will not take much notice of it till it effects the jobs of many people.

Many people will be curious about it at first but the elderly may find it atrocious as it is something they are not familiar with.

I believe lifestyle & industry will be shifted with AI handling interaction with human-being as it will be able to record various interact and gather massive data to effectively optimize the experiences better for future customers.
